Marks Village Building

Aho Architects was selected by the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District to serve as their Architect for the re-building of Building #20 after a natural gas explosion destroyed it on December 17, 2013.

With sensitivity to the tragedy, Aho Architects worked quickly to restore the building and bring new life to this community. The new building has (2) two-story, direct-entry units – a 2-Bedroom and a 3-Bedroom Unit – and it fits perfectly within the footprint of the original Building #20.

The exterior façade was designed to blend respectfully with the other 498 units in the community, but with a few key improvements to enhance and update the overall look and feel. Plus, several safety upgrades were incorporated into the new building, including a fire sprinkler system and code upgrades.

All components of the building were designed with durability in mind while still maintaining a residential “home-like” aesthetic. We’re thrilled to have been part of this project and to have served this community.
